In honor of the new year, neighbors and community leaders shared their favorite words of wisdom:

"Something I try to live by personally and professionally: "Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it the right time?" A former colleague of mine, who was an unofficial mentor, shared that with me at the beginning of my career in education."

— Daniel Rehman, superintendent of West Hempstead school district

"Give a person a fish, and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. We are about building good fishing folks at Malverne."

— Lorna Lewis, superintendent of Malverne school district

"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

—Narda Martin-Haye, member of the Lakeview Civic Association

“'What can you give someone who has everything? A gift that has meaning.' I think that applies t anyone we care about, regardless of financial means and possessions."

Tim Sullivan, mayor of Malverne

"Serve the community by listening. Process and then take action as needed."

—Maureen Greenberg, president of the West Hempstead Community Support Association

"A motto that I go by, or a phrase that sticks with me and motivates me, is 'I’ll find a way or make one.' It’s my alma mater motto."

—William Anders, co-founder of the Lakeview Civic Association
