Students became the teachers at Cornwell Avenue School

The English as a New Language Ambassadors at Cornwell Avenue School recently hosted a group of West Hempstead Secondary School ENL students to engage in a reading activity, and then an engineering design project.

Students listened to “The Gingerbread Man,” narrated by Bruce Bailey Johnson. They also had to problem-solve a way for the gingerbread man to cross the river by building different things. Students built jet skis, bridges, speedboats and helicopters using Legos. The Secondary School students were the group leaders helping their younger peers sketch their design, and then facilitating the building of the Legos.

Cornwell Avenue ENL teachers Christine Walsh, Gina Rafferty and Koula Bachas, and Secondary School ENL teachers Madeline Valencia, Lili-Ferguson-Barakat and Lisa McCarthy worked with students on this special collaboration.
