New Nassau Expressway traffic pattern

Beginning Saturday, June 22, there will be a new traffic pattern on the Nassau Expressway, New York State Department of Transportation officials said.

Both the northbound and southbound expressway traffic will be shifted from the current travel lanes onto the newly reconstructed south side of what the roadway also known as route 878.

The change will occur Friday night into Saturday morning. Two travel lanes will remain open in each direction with the new traffic pattern that will remain into the fall. The project is expected to be completed in December.

Variable message signs have been placed in the area to alert motorists. As with most road projects, work may be cancelled, postponed or prolonged due to inclement weather, DOT officials said.

Workers will now begin raising and constructing a new northbound roadway as part of the $130 million project to enhance the safety and operation of the Nassau Expressway between Rockaway Turnpike and Burnside Avenue, as well as improve the resiliency of the roadway that also serves as an evacuate route. Similar work was completed on the southbound side, officials said.

Motorists are urged to slow down and safely move over when approaching roadside vehicles displaying red, white, blue, amber or green lights, including maintenance and construction vehicles in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
