Malverne Fire Department Second Deputy Chief Ernest Bohringer was honored at the village’s March 6 meeting for his heroics during a deli fire in Valley Stream.
Police reported the outbreak of a fire early in the morning on March 3 at a corner deli on West Merrick Road in Valley Stream that left the shop completely gutted. Bohringer, of the Malverne Fire Department, was on his way home from his shift at Port Authority when he heard the dispatch from the Valley Stream Fire Department. Bohringer, along with Nassau County police officers, forced open a locked door in the back of the building where they found a person inside. The person was pulled to safety and transported to a local hospital.
“He has made our village proud, and we are honored to recognize his dedication to our residents and the residents of our neighboring communities,” said Malverne Mayor Patti Ann McDonald, who presented a citation to Bohringer.
Bohringer, who has been with the fire department for 11 years, said while he felt grateful for the recognition, other firefighters would have done the same thing.
“I didn’t do anything different than any of my firemen, or any other firemen in the county or state would’ve done in the same situation. I appreciate the congratulations, and I’m just glad we had a happy ending to it all.”
