Matt Gaven, superintendent of the Rockville Centre School District, recognized Floyd B. Watson Elementary School Principal Jen Pascarella and school nurse Laura Lanning at the school board meeting on Thursday night, for helping save a resident in distress.

The incident occurred earlier this month, when a Rockville Centre resident passed out about a half a block away from the school during dismissal. After assessing the situation, they determined what they needed to do. Lanning took over the situation while Pascarella called 9-1-1 for assistance.

“Kudos to both of them because this person who passed out and was still not doing well when the ambulance came, I am happy to say is doing well now, and it's because of their attention and care,” Gaven said. “It's never easy in an emergency situation and I was happy to see how cool, calm and collected they both were.”

Pascarella and Lanning remained at the scene until emergency services arrived to transport the resident to a nearby hospital.

“We are always grateful for the work you two do every single day, and this day in particular your heroic efforts and support,” Kelly Barry, president of the Rockville Centre school board, said.
