Evelyn George, 101, of Rockville Centre

Evelyn George died peacefully at South Nassau Communities Hospital on Aug. 3. She was 101.

Born in Seattle, she went to work for the New York Telephone Company at the age of 16, where she met her husband, William George. Before leaving the telephone company, she taught ceramics and arts and crafts.

The couple retired to Florida but upon her husband’s death, she returned to New York and worked at the A. & S. Department store in Hempstead. She eventually retired to the Rockville Centre Nursing Center. She is survived by three children, six grandchildren who knew her as “Grandma Maggie,” and seven great grandchildren.
