Arlene "Kitty" P. Byers, 88

Arlene Perry Byers, 88, died peacefully at Jenner’s Pond Retirement Community in West Grove, Penn. on Aug. 2.

Arlene, known as Kitty, was born in Barre, Vermont, the daughter of Quincy H. Perry and Elizabeth (Sutton) Perry.

Her higher education began at Lyndon State College where she graduated with a degree in Elementary Education. While at Lyndon she met her future husband, Dr. Richard S. Byers, who became the superintendent of the Rockville Centre Union Free School District.

She furthered her education at Boston University, receiving a BA as a Reading Specialist.

Kitty was a lifelong educator: an elementary school teacher, reading tutor, instructor of gifted students and supervisor of student teachers at Adelphi University. She also enjoyed serving as a Christian educator at the United Church of Rockville Centre where she was an active member for many years.

Her hobbies included cooking, entertaining, reading, knitting and playing bridge, and she was an accomplished pianist.

After her husband retired in 1977, the couple enjoyed many years together in Venice, Fla. and Greensboro,Vermont. Since 2005 they resided in West Grove.

Kitty was very devoted to her family. She is survived by Richard S. Byers, her husband of 66 years; children Linda Wyles, Richard Byers and John Byers; grandchildren Rebecca, Richard, Christopher, Scott and Emily; and great grandchildren Alexander and Sloane. Her brother Quincy L. Perry predeceased her.

A private service will be held in Danville, Vermont.
