Oceanside School five visits water reclamation facility

Grade five students of Ramona D’Aulisa and Elisabetta Bavaro at School Five visited the South Shore Water Reclamation Facility at Bay Park on Friday, Jan. 12, where they learned how the water treatment cycle operates.

This trip ties directly into their study of what happens to our dirty water and how we clean it. A driving question of their curriculum is where clean water comes from and where it goes after we use it.

As part of the science unit, the classes have been learning about the three main processes used at wastewater treatment facilities - physical, biological, and chemical. Students enjoyed connecting what they are learning in the classroom with seeing how the processes work first-hand. They were prepared with several questions which were answered along the way by the tour guides.

They also learned about careers in the waste treatment industry.
