Virginia Redman lived in Inwood for 30 years

Longtime Inwood resident Virginia Ann Redman (née Beatty) died on June 5. She was 88.

Redman grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Newtown High School in Elmhurst, Queens.

In 1946, she married George Redman in 1946. “My father’s sister and my mother worked together,” said Redman’s daughter, Ann. “And my father was home on leave from the military and my aunt told my mother to come meet him. They went home, had dinner and she found no interest in him what so ever. But a year later, he knocked on her door and pulled out his charm.”

They were married for 51 years. George Sr. died in 1997.

Redman was a supervisor in the dietary department at Haven Manor Health Care Center in Far Rockaway. She lived in Inwood for nearly 30 years.

Ann described her mother as pleasant and loving, and said she would come to someone’s aid on a moment’s notice. “If she didn’t have a kind word to say, she wouldn’t say anything at all,” Ann said. “She was the most lovely human being on the face of the earth. If she could help you in any way, she would. If her friends and family needed her, she’d jump in a taxi cab, because she didn’t drive, and fly over there.”

After her home was flooded in Hurricane Sandy, Redman lived with Ann in Far Rockaway until failing resulted in her being admitted to Haven Manor.

Services were held at Meserole Funeral Home in Inwood on June 8, and Redman was interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Brooklyn.

In addition to Ann, Redman is survived by her sons Dennis (Michelle) and George Jr., and grandchildren Brian and Diana. Redman was also predeceased by her brother Vincent Beatty.
