Competitive hoops and charity were both on display at the 28th annual Sid Tanenbaum Basketball Tournament held at North Woodmere Park on June 1.
Sponsored by the Nassau County Department Parks and Recreation and Cedarhurst-based Rock and Wrap It Up!, an organization that seeks to reduce poverty and supports a wide array of charitable goals including student scholarships, the tournament honors the memory of Tanenbaum, who was an All-American player at New York University and played for the Knicks. He was inducted in the Jewish Athletes Hall of Fame in 1994. The basketball courts at the park are named for him.
There were winners in three divisions. Hewlett Harbor resident Eric Wagner captained the winning over-40 team. In the open division, Rodney Grandy won a third title; doing it with three different teams. Ishmael Young and Raymel Crumpton were the leaders of the teen winning squad.
