Visit the Hewlett firehouse on Sunday, donate blood, honor the memory of Daniel Berrios

To honor the memory of Daniel Berrios, a volunteer firefighter who died in a motorcycle accident on his 48th birthday last year, the Hewlett Fire Department will host a blood drive on April 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the firehouse at Franklin Ave., Hewlett.

Berrios volunterred with the Inwood Fire Department for three year and Hewlett for 13 years.

The Cedarhurst resident worked for Sanitary District 1 for 30 years and also drove buses for Independent Coach, taking kids to their athletic games.

A motorcyclist enthusiast, Berrios hung out with the Nassau County Fire Riders motorcycle club.

Berrios’ friends and family urge the Hewlett community to donate blood, emphasizing that one donation can potentially save up to three lives.

According to the New York Blood Center, blood donors can give every 56 days, and platelet donors can give twice per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently lifted eligibility restrictions for individuals who lived in Europe during certain periods of time. It only takes one hour to donate. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require a blood transfusion. Those in need include: cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many more.
