Former Five Towns resident ‘Chuck’ Doughten

dies at 80

Maurice “Chuck” Doughten, of Lakeland, Fla., and formerly of Inwood and Hewlett, died of liver and pancreatic cancer on Oct. 16. He was 80.

Doughten was born in Brooklyn on Dec. 15, 19830. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, and earned the Bronze Medal for Valor. A structural steel iron worker for 60 years in Brooklyn for Local 361, he was also apprentice coordinator and recording secretary in New York, and taught apprentice school for 30 years. After retiring to Lakeland, he taught in Tampa at the Local 397 apprentice school for 16 years.

He is survived by his wife, Teryl Ann Doughten, of Lakeland; daughter Patricia Doughten Picone (Victor), Hewlett; son Glen Doughten (Denise), of Oceanside; grandchildren Nicole, Matthew, James Victor and Christopher; great-grandson David, a sister, Virginia Zoccoli (Fred), of Riverhead; a brother Thomas Doughten (Roberta Rooney), of West Patterson, NJ and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial Christian mass was held at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church in Hewlett on Nov. 12. Donations may made to Good Shepherd Hospice, 320 West Main Street, Lakeland, FL 33801, or to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, P.O. Box 1983, Memphis, TN 38101-2132.

John Thomas Devereaux dies at 51

Raised in the Five Towns and a resident of California, John Thomas Devereaux died on Nov. 19 in Palm Springs, Calif., after battling an illness for more than two years. He was 51.

Devereaux was born on Long Island and was raised in Cedarhurst by his grandparents Francis “Doc” Abrams and wife Florence “Pinky” Abrams.

He was the loving son of his predeceased mother, Theresa Mare Devereaux, and loving brother of his predeceased sister, Dorothy Devereaux. He is survived by his sister, Cathy Marino and her husband Frank, of Long Beach, N.Y.; a brother, Michael J. Devereaux, of New York City and several aunts, uncles, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Dec. 1 at 12:30 p.m., at Donohue Cecere Funeral Home at 290 Post Ave., in Westbury. Interment will be at Holy Rood Cemetery at 111 Old Country Road, also in Westbury.
