West Hempstead's Chestnut Street School turns 108

Wednesday marked the 108th anniversary of Chestnut Street School in West Hempstead. This year, its anniversary will consist of a modest, yet meaningful Meneely Bell Tolling on Friday at the 2:45 p.m. dismissal.

Since its opening in 1913, the school has had three additions from the four room school house that it once was. It has served as a school for over eighty years in addition to housing the West Hempstead Public Library for more than two decades and the school administration offices.
