West Hempstead woman assaults, spits on police officer during arrest

Nassau County police arrested a West Hempstead for allegedly assaulting a police officer on Tuesday in East Garden City, at 11:30 p.m.

Police were informed about an incident that occurred on Oak Street in East Garden City. When the police arrived, they found a damaged black 2002 Mercedes Benz, which had hit the median barrier. The driver, defendant Charmaine Grant, was informed that the vehicle was inoperable and would need to be towed. As officers gathered the information of the vehicle, they discovered that neither the license plate or the registration belonged to the vehicle.

When Grant, 22, was asked to provide any documentation proving ownership of the vehicle, she became verbally aggressive and refused to do so. Officers placed her arrest and placed her in the back of a police vehicle. As a female officer went to sit in the back with Grant, she turned her legs toward the officer and began to kick her in the abdomen, chest, hip arm and legs, which caused substantial pain.

Officers physically removed Grant from the police vehicle and placed her on a stretcher, and she continued to kick and spit on officers as they secured her to the stretcher. Grant was transported by Nassau County Police Ambulance to a nearby hospital for assessment. The female officer suffered chest pain and was also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Grant was charged with Assault in the second degree, operating a motor vehicle unlicensed, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration in the second degree. She was arraigned on Wednesday in Mineola.
