West Hempstead High School students paint mural at Chestnut Street School

Posted

West Hempstead High School students took their artwork beyond the classroom and created a symbolic mural in the Chestnut Street School entryway. Students collaboratively brainstormed ideas on a theme to promote learning and community.
High school art teacher Cassie Ross-Dinin recruited 10 students in grades 11 and 12 to work on the mural during a four-day period and oversaw the project to its completion. The mural includes imagery from all four seasons, books adorned with classic kindergarten titles and chestnut leaves in honor of the school name.
Ryan Emmanuel-Cooke, the district’s director of fine and performing arts, worked with the team of student artists to inspire creativity, share expertise and offer feedback.
“As a district, we are always looking for opportunities for our students to connect their talents, interests and passions with what they learn in school,” Emmanuel-Cooke said in a news release. “This project is a perfect example that will be visible in our community for many years to come.”
