The United Jewish Appeal-Federation of New York will honor nine residents of Nassau County’s South Shore with Community Leadership awards at its inaugural South Shore dinner on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m., at the Seawane Country Club in Hewlett Harbor.

Alan and Barbara Hartenstein, members of Temple Israel in Lawrence, Five Towns residents Jackie and Dr. Ron Kaminer, Lois and Marc Kemp and Pamela and Dr. Max Scheer, along with Rockville Centre resident and Nassau County Planning Commissioner Jeffrey Greenfield are the honorees.

“These outstanding leaders have enriched our community and embody the values of UJA-Federation,” organization officials said.

Capt. Libby Weiss (res.), an expert on media coverage of Israel and an activist on the campaign for international legitimacy and the challenges of battling terrorists while the world watches, is the guest speaker. She is the head of international social media for the Israel Defense Forces.

The UJA-Federation of New York is considered the largest local charitable organization in the world. It raises money and designates those funds to fulfill a mission to “care for people in need, inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning and strengthen Jewish communities in New York, in Israel, and around the world,” according to its mission statement.

Ilene and Larry Cohen and Nancy and Alan Hoffman are the dinner chairs. Richard Grobman and Steven Kaufman are the South Shore executive committee chairs.

Tickets are $150 per person and intended for donors who gave $500 or more to the 2020 annual campaign or $250 for first-time participants. The affair is described as an elaborate cocktail reception.
