Regeneron semifinalists named, including 36 from Long Island

Three hundred semifinalists in the Regeneron Science Talent Search were announced Wednesday afternoon, and 36 seniors from Long Island high schools — including seven from the Heralds’ coverage area — were among the mix.

Regeneron, a competition of the Society for Science & the Public, is considered the country’s most prestigious high school science contest. Entrants must submit a 20-page research paper, which can take months or even years to produce, as well as a series of several essays.

Semifinalists and their schools each receive a $2,000 prize. The 300 semifinalists were selected from a pool of 1,993 applicants who hailed from 659 high schools in 49 states. The 40 finalists will be announced in late January.

According to the SSP, “Scholars were chosen based on their exceptional research skills, commitment to academics, innovative thinking and promise as scientists.”
