Touting his experience on water issues, Democratic challenger James Gaughran, an attorney in private practice who has served on the Huntington Town Board and in the Suffolk County Legislature, defeated Republican incumbent Carl Marcellino on Tuesday.

In addition to his past political, Gaughran is chairman of the Suffolk County Water Authority.

He had lost to Marcellino in a squeaker in 2016. This time around was a very different story. Gaughran captured 55 percent of the vote to Marcellino's 45.

Gaughran was among the Senate wins that handed complete control of the State Legislature to Democrats.
