Civic leaders in West Hempstead share community updates

The West Hempstead Community Support Association held a community forum via Zoom on July 20.

During the meeting, the POP unit from the Nassau County 5th Precinct spoke about numerous issues in the community such as fireworks, car break-ins, and the helicopters being deployed. The officers encouraged residents to call and report fireworks and car break-ins to 911. They also said that many of the cars are not locked and encourage residents to lock their cars when not in use. Helicopters are deployed for several reasons such as searching for a missing person, if an accident victim needs to be helicoptered to a hospital, or for organized marches throughout a town.

Many of the community members are concerned with the condition of Hall’s Pond Park. Neil Rosenblatt, the civic’s quality of life chairman, gave an extensive report on the pond. He noted several issues that have made the actual pond look unkept. The pumps motor is burnt out as well as the retaining wall at the end of the pond near the 9/11 Memorial side of the pond, which is leaking and also in need to repairs.

“Nassau County will be dredging the pond and repairing all the aspects needed to make the pond a beautiful place for the residents to visit,” said Maureen Greenberg, president of the West Hempstead Community Support Association. “The flagpole painting has been contracted out by the county to refresh the look of it. Neil will also be requesting more garbage cans around the pond and additional pickups of the trash.”

The civic association plans to hold their annual 9/11 Memorial Service on Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. Social distancing and masks will be required. The event will be posted on their Facebook page and their website.
