New York American Water (NYAW) announced on Wednesday, Dec. 4, that it would invest $650,000 in a water mains installation project along Atlantic Boulevard in Wantagh.

The project began on Dec. 4 and includes installing 2,350 feet of 8-inch ductile iron main. The project will also replace three separate fire hydrants and “53 different utility-owned service lines,” according to a NYAW news release.

The mains replacement project will take place along Atlantic Boulevard, stretching from Merrick Road to Byron Street in Wantagh.

NYAW announced that the work is expected to be ongoing for six weeks. The completion date is expected to be around mid-to-late January. The work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays. In a prepared release, NYAW stated, “residents should note that sections of the street where construction is taking place may be closed to traffic during these working hours,” and that  “New York American Water will coordinate with residents along Atlantic Boulevard to minimize disruptions.”

According to NYAW, after the water mains are replaced, the street restorations will be “completed when weather permits.”

“Water main replacement is necessary to ensure the resiliency of our water distribution system,” said New York American Water Manager of Engineering John Kilpatrick. “Proactive replacement of aging water mains reduces the likelihood of interruptions of water service due to leaks and breaks, and allows us to provide better service for our customers.”

New York American Water also advised any nearby pedestrians and drivers to take caution when approaching the work site.

New York American Water, whose parent company American Water Works Co. recently announced that it solid it’s New York Operation to Liberty Utilities in a prospective deal worth $608 million, services nearly 120,000 Nassau County residents.
