Water main replacement begins on Broadway and Gold streets

New York American water announced that construction has begun to replace water mains in Valley Stream on both Gold and Broadway streets. The work, which began on April 17, is scheduled to last four weeks and will take place between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to a release by the utility.

Roughly 1,200 feet of water main will be replaced along with a fire hydrant and 30 home service lines, which connect the main to houses along the street. The pipes being replaced were originally installed in 1932, the release read.

The project is an effort to address water discoloration, according to NYAW Manger of Engineering John Kilpatrick. “As we continue to modernize our system for the betterment of the communities we serve, water main replacement projects are vitally important to protecting the safety of our water supply and improving our water quality,” he said in a statement.

Work will take place on Broadway Street from Gold Street south to a dead end, as well as on Gold Street between Broadway and Green streets.

The project is expected to cost the utility $225,000, and the Village of Valley Stream will be responsible for contracting to repave the streets after the work has been completed and passed all required inspections.

Kilpatrick explained in a follow-up statement that, except in the case of emergencies, the utility typically coordinates with local municipalities to time its water main replacements with scheduled street replacement work.
