South High School’s step team’s performance was not over when the music stopped outside the bandshell on the Village Green on Nov. 20. Instead, the team members started chanting.

“Hard work and dedication, while getting an education – The Aces love the state champs, from us congratulations,” they shouted.

The performance was part of the village’s ceremony to honor the historic performance of Valley Stream South girls’ soccer team, which completed its season 21 – 0 and won the Class A state championship earlier this month. USA Today ranked the team fourth in the United States.

Coach Demetri Adrahtas attributed the girls’ success to their determination to win. “They refused to be defeated at every step of the way,” he said.

As part of the ceremony, Mayor Ed Fare and Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, a Democrat from Elmont, presented the team with citations, and Town of Hempstead Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Republican from Valley Stream, presented the team with a sign. Fare also declared the day ‘Valley Stream South Girls’ Soccer Day’ in Valley Stream.

“They brought great pride to our school,” said South High School Principal Maureen Henry.

Adrahtas ended the night by thanking the community members who supported the team. “They’re a product of a great community, they’re a product of incredible parents, a product of incredible friends, families, schools, teachers, coaches that nurtured them and people that supported them,” he said.

“We are so happy to bring this championship home, we’re happy to bring this state title home and now that it’s in Valley Stream, we plan on keeping it in Valley Stream,” he added.
