Sip This, a popular Rockaway Avenue coffee shop and hangout is closing Friday after nine years in business, its owners announced this week on social media.

“We thought Sip This would last much longer, and we, our staff and our families are deeply saddened by this outcome,” co-owners David Sabatino and Stephanie Romanelli wrote in a joint statement.

Although they did not specify a reason for the closure, it, like most businesses New York had been forced to shutter over the past three months due to the coronavirus pandemic, and early on there had been concerns whether the shop would be able to remain in business.

Sip This had become a staple in Valley Stream, hosting comedy and art shows, networking events and music performances, and served as a welcoming community social space for creative, charity and business endeavors.

With news of its closure came an outpouring of sadness, with many posting how important Sip This had been in their lives, serving as the location of their first big break, or date with a loved one, or simply a place to sit down, chat and unwind after work with friends.

Sip This occupied the former location of legendary record shop Slipped Disc, from which Sip This received its namesake.

“There couldn’t have been two nicer people and a greater business to take over the Slipped Dic storefront these past nine years,” Wrote Slipped Disc owner, Mike Schutzman.

Sip This will be open one last time this Friday evening from 4 to 11 p.m.
