East Meadow Chamber of Commerce honors four graduating seniors

Emily Carman, Kaitlyn Surless, Stefanie Botman and Hailey Schiller, all graduating seniors in the East Meadow School District, stood out as volunteers, role models and scholars to the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. For their efforts over the past four years, the chamber has awarded them each with a $1,000 scholarship.

To qualify for the scholarships, outgoing seniors needed to write an essay exemplifying their strengths and submit it, along with a letter of recommendation, to a committee of judges. On the committee are four members of the Chamber of Commerce, including Christine Mooney, Doug Wood Sr., Lyndsey Gallagher and Rosemary Basmajian.

“One of the biggest things we focused on was their involvement in the community,” said Basmajian during the chamber’s June 5 meeting at Major’s Steakhouse in East Meadow, where it awarded the seniors.

Botman will be attending the University of Delaware in the fall, where she will be studying nursing. Surless plans on attending Marist College, in Poughkeepsie, where she will study elementary education. Schiller hopes to become an English professor and will study English Literature at SUNY Geneseo. And Carman will be studying accounting, earning her Associate’s degree at Nassau Community College before earning her Bachelor’s degree at Hofstra University.

“I’d like to thank the chamber for substantially contributing to my education,” Schiller said. “Even though I’ll be attending SUNY Geneseo, I still plan to shop local when I can.”
