Agnes Spero, former Valley Stream resident, dies at 97

Agnes Linsalata Spero, a former resident of Valley Stream, died on Nov. 22, 2010, at the Rockville Centre Nursing Home. She was 97.

Born in Brooklyn on Dec. 16, 1912, Spero was the oldest of 10 children. She lived most of her life in Brooklyn where she raised her family with her husband, James. They moved to Valley Stream 31 years ago.

She enjoyed being with her family and livened up all of the family gatherings, especially weddings where she wore out her dance partners. Her longevity and lively personality earned her the nickname “La Grande” in her family. She retired from a clerical position at Equitable Insurance more than 30 years ago.

Survivors include her children James of Brooklyn, Richard and his wife Ester of Malverne, Rosemary McAndrew and her husband Bob of Morristown, N.J., John and his wife Anita of New Hampton, N.Y.; seven grandchildren, Richard Spero and his wife JoAnn of Freeport, Denise Cona and her husband Joe of Franklin Square, Jennifer Vuotto and her husband Jonathan of Morristown, N.J., Dr. Lisa McAndrew of New York City, Michael McAndrew of Morristown, N.J., and Madalena and Gabrielle Spero of New Hampton, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Deanna and Vanessa Cona of Franklin Square; sisters Annette and Gloria; sister-in-law Rose; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband.

A funeral mass was held on Nov. 27 at Holy Name of Mary Church in Valley Stream. Interment followed at the Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury.
