Woman arrested at Oceanside Stop & Shop and charged with assault, attempted robbery

A Center Moriches woman was arrested at Stop & Shop in Oceanside on Thursday for allegedly assaulting two employees and a police officer and attempting to steal items from the store.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, Jemella Gilpin, 40, entered the store, at 3577 Long Beach Road, and once inside, she took assorted items off the shelves and attempted to leave the business without paying. When she was confronted by two store employees, a 39-year-old man and a 60-year-old man, she flailed her arms toward them, causing minor injuries to both.

When police arrived, Gilpin tried to leave the scene and once again flailed her arms and legs, causing a a leg injury to a police officer. She was placed under arrest without further incident.

The two store employees were treated at the scene, while the officer was transported to a local hospital.

Gilpin was charged with second-degree robbery, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, disorderly conduct, two counts of second-degree assault and second-degree harassment. She was arraigned Friday at First District Court, in Hempstead.
