Uptick of coronavirus cases in Malverne

Malverne Mayor Keith Corbett announced on Tuesday that the Village of Malverne has three confirmed cases of coronavirus. The announcement came shortly after the county reported more than 3,000 cases. As of Friday, the number of confirmed cases in the village jumped to 11.

“I must caution that over the next few days, those numbers will increase,” Corbett said on Malverne TV. “You will start to have friends or family that have contracted the coronavirus and then it will start to hit home a little more. I want everyone to stay calm, remain vigilant and be safe.”

Corbett said the reason that the village has kept its cases at a low number to this point is because residents have heeded the village board’s warnings of staying home. The village instituted the ‘Malverne get and go’, in which residents who are in need of supplies would go straight to the store and return home immediately.

Corbett told residents that all playgrounds and basketball courts in the village are closed, but everything is disinfected on a daily basis, based on orders from the county and the state’s Department of Health. The village’s parks, however, are still open.

The village is also working with County Executive Laura Curran to keep the village’s Emergency Medical Services unit informed on keeping residents safe. “It is this board’s first priority — Deputy Mayor [Perry] Cuocci, Trustee [John] O’Brien, Trustee [Lauren] Touchard, Trustee [Tim] Sullivan and myself to keep you safe,” Corbett said.
