Seven Brothers relocates on Long Beach Road in Oceanside

Excitement was in the air at the grand opening of Seven Brothers Gourmet’s new location at 2831 Long Beach Road in Oceanside on July 30.

The Italian supermarket has moved just three blocks north of its previous location on Long Beach Road to a larger space two doors away from Modell’s. With the new spot, Seven  Brothers also gains more parking and room for social distancing inside the store.

Co-owner Anthony Fiorito called the change “bigger and better.”

“We’ll be able to serve the public more efficiently,” added his brother and co-owner, Joseph Fiorito.

The brothers own the business with their father, Tony Fiorito, who founded it 48 years ago.

As customers picked up groceries and made bread and deli orders that morning, community members gathered for a ribbon cutting for the brand new store and congratulated the three men, their family and staff.

Chamber of Commerce members, as well as representatives for local elected officials, cut the ribbon with the Fiorito family.

“We’re very excited for a new beginning,” Joseph said. “It’s a pleasure to serve and be a part of the community.”

Tony immigrated from Italy in 1969 and started Seven Brothers in 1972. He named it “Seven Brothers” because he is one of seven sons; he also has six sisters. At the time, the Italian market was called “Tony’s & The Seven Brothers Meat Market” — first, with a location in Woodhaven, which then moved to Jamaica, Queens. 

In 2005, Tony closed the shop in Jamaica and opened Seven Brothers Gourmet in Oceanside.

In anticipation of the new Oceanside location’s opening, Seven Brothers Gourmet shared some of Tony’s history via Facebook with old photos and stories of arriving in America more than 50 years ago.

"The new store represents my whole life,” he wrote. “... I've worked so hard all of these years to give my family a good future. Now, it’s their turn to carry the traditions, make their own, and continue our story. I have been a very lucky man."

Much of his family — children, grandchildren — were there for the celebration. His wife, MaryAnn, died in 2011. 

Joseph said plans for the new store had been in the works for three years now. As it happens, the larger store also accommodates for more social distancing among shoppers, the owners noted.

“We wanted to make it feel like your home,” Anthony said. “You’re shopping, and it’s also comfortable.”
