Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital announced that it is has been named a 2020 five-star recipient for four women’s health care categories, and also earned the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award by Healthgrades. This is the eighth consecutive year that the medical facility has received the excellence award in gynecologic surgery.

MSSN earned awards in the following women’s care service lines:

—Five star for gynecologic procedures (eight years in a row)

—Five star for hysterectomy (six years in a row)

—Five star for caesarian section delivery

—Five star for vaginal delivery

“These awards are a result of Mount Sinai South Nassau’s steadfast commitment to providing high-quality, patient centered women’s healthcare services,” MSSN President and CEO Richard J. Murphy said. “Our team worked tirelessly this year to provide care during a pandemic and excelled to meet every challenge presented to them. I am extraordinarily proud of their efforts.”

Based on comparison outcome data, the awards place MSSN among a select group of hospitals in the US — the top 5 percent of all hospitals evaluated for gynecologic procedures and the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated for providing outstanding quality outcomes in gynecologic surgery. Patients have a lower chance of experiencing a complication when treated at hospitals receiving one or more of Healthgrades’ Women’s Care Specialty Excellence Awards than if they were treated in hospitals that were not recipients, according to Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

To demonstrate the difference in quality and outcomes between hospitals receiving the excellence award from Healthgrades and those that did not, and to help consumers evaluate and compare hospitals’ performance in gynecologic surgery, Healthgrades analyzed all-payer state data for 16 states from 2016 through 2018. Healthgrades found that there is a significant variation in hospital quality between those that have received five stars and those that have not.

The analysis found that patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, had, on average, a 46.7 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. It also revealed that if all hospitals in the analysis performed similarly to those receiving the award, complications could have potentially been avoided for 10,121 patients.

“Our multi-disciplinary health care team of top physicians and nurses utilize the latest medical technologies and treatments to deliver standard-setting healthcare tailored to the specific needs of women,” said Dr. Alan Garely, the chairman of obstetrics and gynecology at MSSN and professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Science at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The hospital also has multiple accreditations, designations and awards for its women’s health services, including accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and Baby-Friendly Hospital designation.

MSSN provides a range of women’s healthcare services, including breast health, obstetrics and gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, genetic counseling, women’s imaging, and gynecologic oncology.

“This ranking is a testament to our commitment to provide high-quality care to women, from high-risk pregnancies and infertility to breast cancer and reproductive malignancies,” said Dr. Adhi Sharma, the hospital’s chief medical officer and executive vice president of clinical and professional affairs. “I commend our dynamic team of physicians, nurses and support staff who are committed to providing cutting-edge care to the women in our community.”

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers women access to specialized health care for optimum treatment of reproductive health conditions, from endometrial biopsies and colposcopies to gynecologic oncology. Its Women’s Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders uses state-of-the-art technology administered by to diagnose and treat all-too-common conditions, such as incontinence and constipation, and MSSN is one of only a handful of locations in the country that offers this service.

MSSN’s obstetricians use advanced medical technology at the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine to provide the specialized care mothers, and unborn children may need to monitor and manage conditions that, if left untreated, could jeopardize the health and wellbeing of the child, mother or both.

In the Center for New Beginnings, a team of experienced obstetricians, labor and delivery nurses and high-risk pregnancy specialists delivered 2,326 babies in 2019. In addition to advanced maternal-fetal medical technologies, the center features 26 private family/newborn rooms with first-class hotel-like accommodations, spacious labor and delivery rooms, and a 6-bed neonatal intensive care unit.

Staffed by board-certified neonatologists, the NICU is equipped with the dedicated medical technologies that premature deliveries and newborns with developmental complications or conditions require. The center also has a dedicated state-of-the-art surgical suite for mothers needing a caesarean section delivery.

The Center for Breast Health is accredited by the American College of Surgeon’s National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. NAPBC accreditation is granted only to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment and is able to comply with established NAPBC standards.

“Hospital quality should be top of mind for consumers when they evaluate and compare hospital performance,” Healthgrades Chief Medical Officer Brad Bowman said. “Women who select a hospital with a five-star rating can feel confident in their choice knowing that these organizations are committed to providing exceptional women’s care to their patients.”
