After roughly a decade at 350 Hempstead Ave. in Malverne, the Malverne Diner has closed permanently last Sunday.

“Our time in Malverne was short, but a memorable one,” said owner Erika Agoston and her family, in a joint statement on Facebook. “We are forever grateful for the support and love the town of Malverne and its wonderful residents have shown us these past two years.”

Malverne Chamber of Commerce President Kathi Monroe, who frequented the diner often, said she will miss the Hungarian dishes and Agoston’s generosity.

“The Malverne Diner has been a fixture in our community for about a decade,” Monroe said. “It’s going to be a tremendous loss for our community. It’s sad for our village to have another empty store, but this is why we urge people to shop local and to keep our dollars in Malverne as best as we can.”

Malverne Feeding Our Heroes & Helping Our Merchants announced on Facebook that the group created a Venmo collection to support Agoston going forward. The group raised $1,350 as of Monday.

“Concerned Malverne residents, the mayor and other elected officials, as well as the Malverne Chamber of Commerce have been able to support and keep most of our businesses afloat during this difficult year,"  said Chamber Vice President Maria Casini. "We are all devastated our Diner is closing. We wish Erika and her family the best.”

“We will never forget the kindness and generosity of those who have been supporting us this past year,” Agoston’s family said, “but unfortunately, we must face the inevitable. We will greatly miss so many of our regulars who have made our darkest days a little brighter.”
