Honoring MLK’s dream in Baldwin

The Baldwin school district's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration once again sought to honor the civil rights icon’s commitment to doing the right thing and building bridges to others.

Baldwin students from the high school, middle school and elementary school honored MLK’s life and message with skits, dance, poetry and musical performances. The Concerned Parents of Baldwin, formed in 1980, hosted the program as it does every year.

The group this year honored one of its late members, Barbara Sher, for her contributions to the Concerned Parents of Baldwin. Bll Shelley, Sher’s life partner, accepted the award.

Baldwin has observed King’s birthday, Jan. 15, since 1981 — two years before the third Monday of January was declared “Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” a national holiday. The annual MLK program was originally presented in the Coes Neck Park community room, but was moved to the high school auditorium in 1982.
