Fun for everyone at annual canoe races in Freeport and Baldwin

The Long Island Herald did more than just take photos of the Great Freeport Canoe Races at Cow Meadow Park on Sunday. Nadya Nataly, editor of the Freeport Herald Citizen, and Zack Gottehrer-Cohen, assistant editor of the Glen Cove Herald Gazette, placed second in one of the day’s races.

The team of Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy and Ivan Sayles, president of the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and owner of Nawlins Seafood Company, took home the gold in a race that also featured County Legislators Steven Rhoads and Debra Mulé, who came in fourth.

The Great Freeport Canoe Races is a daylong event with dozens of participants paddling from 10 a.m. to the early afternoon. It’s been a tradition in the village for more than 40 years and is hosted by the Freeport Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by the Freeport Police Athletic League, with support from the village, which raises funds for the PAL’s programming.

Earlier in the week, the annual special needs canoe race was held in Milburn Creek.
