Freeport honors fallen vets

While the Village of Freeport could not hold its annual Memorial Day Parade due to the Covid-19 pandemic, village officials still joined together with the Freeport Fire and Police Departments this morning to hold a small ceremony for local veterans at the village’s World War I mortar monument on Guy Lombardo Avenue.

Mayor Robert Kennedy, a U.S. Navy veteran, led the ceremony as Village Trustees Ron Ellerbe and Carmen Piñeyro placed a wreath by the monument’s plaque.

“The village will hang its flag at half-staff until noon, which represents those who gave their lives for the service of this country,” Kennedy said.

The flag will be raised, again, at full-staff at noon.
