About 200 local residents and first responders gathered outside Mount Sinai South Nassau hospital on April 5 to show their gratitude for the doctors, nurses and other medical staff at the frontlines of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Freeport Fire Department Chiefs Ray Maguire and Thomas Johnson were among the many fire firefighters at the scene hoisting the American flag on their trucks to celebrate the medical professionals taking care of the surrounding communities.

“It was all to thank and support those working for us during a terrible situation,” Maguire said.

The rally took place just outside the hospital’s emergency room, where supporters cheered on from a social distance to those coming in for and exiting from their 7 p.m. shifts. The supporters put up signs with words of encouragement, and some of the hospital workers came out for a bit to greet and wave back at the crowd.

Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy, who had recovered from his own bout with the coronavirus, also came out to cheer on the medical professionals.

“It was really moving to see everyone come together like that for the doctors, nurses, volunteers and staff at the hospital,” Kennedy said.
