East Rockaway schools hire new assistant superintendent

James DeTommaso was appointed assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the East Rockaway School District by the Board of Education and began his role on July 8.

DeTommaso, a Massapequa resident, graduated from The Johns Hopkins University in Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences. He also earned his master’s degree in special education and a professional diploma in education administration from Long Island University, C.W. Post in Brookville.

He began his 28-year career in education at East Rockaway Junior-Senior High School as a special education teacher and coach for the varsity football and lacrosse teams. He also served as dean of students and assistant principal for 15 years. For the past three years, DeTommaso served as the principal of West Hempstead High School.

He said he was excited to return to East Rockaway schools in his new role. DeTommaso added that he planned to share his knowledge and leadership experience to support the district’s strategic plan and help guide and improve it in the areas of curriculum, instruction and assessment.

DeTommaso said that his additional goals include “working closely with the administrators and teachers to improve student outcomes and provide opportunities for all learners to reach their potential and to continue focusing on re-connecting students to a positive learning environment to meet their academic and social and emotional needs.”
