Baldwin Middle School staffer tested positive for coronavirus, district says

In a letter posted on the Baldwin School District website today, schools Superintendent Dr. Shari Camhi reported that a staff member at Baldwin Middle School self-reported that they tested positive for coronavirus.

“Due to privacy laws, no additional information can be shared,” Camhi said in the letter. “The Department of Health did not recommend that anyone needed to be quarantined or contacted. Effective immediately, the middle school building will be closed for complete fogging and deep cleaning.”

No one will be allowed inside the middle school except for the people necessary to perform and oversee cleaning protocols, according to the letter.

“We expect that the school will be closed for at least a 24-hour period,” Camhi said in the letter. “We have not been directed to do this. We simply believe it is the right thing to do.”

School officials said that, based on continuing information coming from national, state and local health professionals, the case is likely to be the first of many such confirmed cases among the school community, and the community at large.

“This is a time for everyone to practice diligence and caution,” Camhi continued. “As advised by the Department of Health and other health officials, all students are expected to remain home and should be monitored for symptoms. If any symptoms develop, it is recommended that you contact your doctor for guidance.”

School officials said they have contacted the Nassau County Department of Health for guidance about next steps for the protection of community members.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered that all schools, statewide, be closed until April 1.
