Lynbrook Fire Department responds to multiple vehicle fires

Lynbrook firefighters tackled an intense fire that consumed three vehicles in a driveway of a home on Whitehall Street on Nov. 28.

Under the command of Chief Michael Brooks, firefighters responded to a car fire in the driveway and next to the two-story home at 424 Whitehall Street near Holmes Place at 11:20 a.m. While the fire chiefs responded to the scene, they were notified that multiple calls were received for the fire while heavy black smoke could be seen above the trees blocks away.

Two vehicles parked side by side in the back of the driveway and in front of the garage were fully engulfed in flames, with it spreading to a third car and threatening the home.  The flames were high enough to set the next door neighbor’s pine tree on fire.

Engine Company was first on the scene and took the hydrant at the corner of Whitehall Street and Holmes Place.Their first attack hose line went up the driveway to fight the fire, while a second hose line, manned by Vulcan and Tally-Ho Company members, went to the rear of the house to get the area behind the burning vehicles and to cover and protect the garage and the home.

The cause of the fire is unknown, as the two cars that were first ablaze were allegedly not operable with disconnected batteries.

Brooks requested an immediate investigation by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office, which responded to the scene. The result of their investigation is not known at this time. There were no injuries in the fires.
