South Side High School staff member tests positive for coronavirus

A staff member at South Side High School in Rockville Centre self-reported a positive case of COVID-19, district officials reported Friday. Students and staff are advised to remain in precautionary isolation until March 25.

Superintendent Dr. William Johnson said that the case was reported to the Nassau County Department of Health, which advised students and staff to remain isolated for the next week “out of an abundance of caution” to protect themselves and family members.

According to the county Health Department, precautionary isolation means voluntarily removing yourself from contact with others. This includes staying at least six feet away from other people, sleeping in separate rooms and using separate bathrooms, if possible, and having food brought in from a separate location, if possible. Family members should be extra diligent about personal hygiene measures, such as sanitizing surfaces and hand washing frequently.

Those who become ill should not go to a medical facility, Johnson said, but instead should call to arrange a medical consultation with a medical provider or the New York State Department of Health.

Further updates will be provided on the district’s website.
