Summer fun need not end on Labor Day, thanks to Alex Jacobson, who owns both The New York Beach Club (members only) and its restaurant, which is open to the public on weekend evenings. Situated right under the Atlantic Beach boardwalk, The Restaurant features fare prepared by well-selected chefs, and seating — both inside and on a lovely patio right on the beach — that offers a breathtaking oceanfront view. And, there are real, full-grown palm trees, which are transplanted onto the beach each season to help promote that “escape to a tropical island” feeling.
Now in its fourth season, NY Beach Club (formerly New Plaza Beach Club) offers endless amenities to its members and guests. Check the website for specifics. Manning the restaurant is Executive Chef Dan DeSalvo, a CIA (Culinary Institute of America) graduate who boasts 19 years cooking for Morton’s Steakhouse, Mastro’s and other fine restaurants. His sous chef is Lee Gottlieb. Catering is offered for events up to 200 indoors, or 500 using the adjoining beach area and tents. Even the pool can be rented out for parties.
Atmosphere abounds. We watched the sun setting over the ocean while enjoying dinner on an exquisite September evening. Warm rolls and beverages arrived first. Chicken Lettuce Wraps (3) offered a tasty mix of chopped chicken, water chestnuts and sweet soy dressing. Jumbo Baked Clams (3) were enormous and well-seasoned. We loved a special, Coconut Shrimp (5), sprinkled with Thai chili sauce and cucumber wasabi aioli.
Moving to entrees, wild Grilled Salmon came with a medley of fresh vegetables and a baked potato. Filet Mignon was tender and juicy, crowned with a Gorgonzola crust and Bordelaise sauce, joined by mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes. With coffee we shared a slice of creamy NY cheesecake drizzled with caramel sauce. Servers were friendly and attentive.
Dinner appetizers are $8 to $16. Salads are $7 to $12, with an option for add-ons (chicken, steak, shrimp or veggie burger) for an extra $6 to $8. Entrees start at $16 for a burger (beef or veggie) with fries, to $32 for filet mignon. Desserts are $8. Kid-friendly entrees are $8.
The New York Beach Club Restaurant is open to the public for dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations are required for Saturday and suggested for Sunday. Live entertainment usually takes place on Saturday nights. They plan to stay open as long as the weather holds up, and the people keep coming. Look for the palm trees, and park with in their private lot.
