Merrick Lakeside School gets delayed opening after anonymous threat

The Norman J. Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District had a delayed opening on Monday after an anonymous threat was made.

The threat, which was made earlier in the morning, was investigated by Nassau County Police Department officers. They searched the interior and exterior of the buildings with a K-9 unit and found it to be safe for staff and students to return.

According to a letter sent to parents by Superintendent Dominick Palma, the threat was connected to a similar one made on Sept. 17. During the incident, the Nassau County Police Department was contacted and responded as students arrived at the school, creating an "unsettling arrival" for students and families, Palma wrote.

The NCPD determined that someone from out-of-state was pranking the student named on the call. The threat received on Monday was also from an out-of-state number.

The NCPD will continue their investigation.

"I would like to thank the NCPD, as the speed and intensity of their response to these threats is greatly appreciated," Palma wrote. "Please be assured that the district will insist on prosecuting anyone identified in threatening our district. While the threats have been deemed non-credible, they have a profound impact on our school community. Please share our support in protecting the named student involved and help us stand united as a community and combat bullying of any type."

Parents with concerns can reach out to the district's social workers or psychologists, Palma added, and students will be monitored to address any concerns that may arise.

"As I’m sure all Levy Lakeside families will agree, this morning was both frightening and frustrating," Palma wrote. "These threats against our school are disturbing and disgusting; however, the Merrick community is stronger than these troublemakers.  Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this incident."
