Hempstead Town launches PPE initiative to aid local businesses

Standing alongside small business owners in Bellmore’s storied downtown district on Bedford Avenue, Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald Clavin and members of the town board announced a new initiative aimed at helping local businesses.

The personal protective equipment kit program will provide 6,000 kits to qualifying businesses. Each kit comes fully equipped with the basic necessities needed to follow appropriate Covid-19 protocols. The kits include:

- One contactless infrared digital thermometer,

- Five face shields,

- Eight boxes of 50 three-ply masks,

- 100 pairs each of powder-free and vinyl gloves,

- Two gallons of spray-pump hand sanitizer and

- One canister containing 1,500 sanitizing wipes.

The kits are available free of charge and while supplies last. Businesses in need are encouraged to apply online at hempsteadny.gov/ppe-giveaway as soon as possible. Qualifying businesses will be provided with a date, time and location for pickup. All small businesses, including those in incorporated villages and unincorporated communities within the Town of Hempstead, are eligible to apply for the PPE program.

The initiative was made possible through the federal CARES Act, which provided $133 million in funding to the town to distribute economic relief grants to alleviate adverse effects that have arisen due to the pandemic.

“I’d like to thank Senator Schumer for his part in securing the funding for the initiatives that have now helped tens of thousands of Hempstead residents,” Clavin said. “The Town of Hempstead is strong and resilient, and that is due to the men and women that make up America’s largest township. We will get through this pandemic together as we remain committed to providing the aid needed to reopen and restore services to our residents and businesses. The town will continue to do what it can support our residents, our businesses and our community.”

“Business owners were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Town of Hempstead is doing its part to help them recover so they can continue to serve their communities,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby.

Councilman Bruce Blakeman said, “These PPE kits are free and are available right now, and we encourage all local businesses to get their boxes today.”

“The 6,000 free PPE kits will go a long way toward getting town residents back to work and our economy running again,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.

Councilman Dennis Dunne said, “Our local businesses need all the help they can get after a difficult start to the year, and the Town of Hempstead is committed to assisting our neighborhood shops.”

“Town of Hempstead business owners are our family, friends and neighbors,” said Councilman Tom Muscarella, “and we need to do everything in our power to help them during these challenging times.”

Councilman Christopher Carini said, “I am proud to partner with Supervisor Clavin to help small business owners, who are the heart of our Town of Hempstead community.”
