Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2770, the North Bellmore American Legion Post 1749, the American Legion Post 948 and Jewish War Veterans gathered at the corner of Bedford Avenue and Broadway to reflect on their years of service.
The Veterans Memorial, listing the names of lost veterans of the first World War, provided a backdrop to the veterans, who were joined by Boy Scout Troop 192.
“Memorial Day is for remembering the dead,” said Chris Peterkin, commander of Post 2770, “but Veterans Day is for the living.”
Peterkin led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance before the flag was lowered to half-mast.
Three of Bellmore’s World War II veterans joined the ceremony — Ed Schultheiss, James Curry and Herbert Margulis.

Veterans Day was originally celebrated as Armistice Day in recognition of World War I, which ceased on Nov. 11, 1918 at 11 a.m. In 1953, the celebration was renamed Veterans Day to honor the sacrifices of all members of U.S. armed forces.
