LIRR: Island Park train station improvements to last through summer

Interior and exterior renovations of the Island Park train station are slated to begin this week and last through September, according to Long Island Rail Road spokesman Aaron Donovan.

The improvements would include refinishing the station benches and installing new windows, lighting and signage. Additionally, a temporary waiting room will be placed next to the current structure to minimize commuter disruption, Donovan said.

"I'm very excited for this work to get underway,” State Sen. Todd Kaminsky, who has taken an active role addressing LIRR riders’ complaints in recent months, said of the renovations. “The Residents of Island Park pay good money to utilize the LIRR, and I know they'll appreciate the upgrades."

Island Park Mayor Michael McGinty also weighed in on the improvements. “I welcome on behalf of the village board and residents of Island Park the plans of the Long Island Rail Road to upgrade the local rail road station,” he said. “It’s a long time incoming, and I hope that the improvements continue.”
