Fourth-grade class ‘adopts a bear’

Chiara Marangelli’s fourth-grade class at Parkway Elementary School in the East Meadow School District recently “adopted a bear” through the World Wildlife Fund.

After reading “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate, the students wanted to give back. The novel is inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan. Marangelli read the book aloud to her students, who grew motivated to give back to their environment.

The students researched ways to help wildlife and collectively decided to donate to the World Wildlife Fund, which protects bears’ natural habitats. Then, they collected recyclables and donated the funds to the WWF, which “adopted a bear” in their name.
