It’s a common refrain your well-meaning, often younger friend or coworker might tell you to dampen your fears of getting older: “Age is just a number.” more
As a lawyer, I have the greatest respect for the American court system. Our country is one of the few in the world whose courts are not used for political vendettas, as is the case in Russia. That system is manipulated by one man, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and there are countless cases in which he has punished his political enemies by using the judicial system. more
St. Patrick’s Day is in reality no longer a one-day festive occasion celebrated on March 17, but an almost three-week-long celebration full of parades, luncheons, dinners and parties. more
As the superintendent of schools for our community, I am deeply troubled by a recent decision by Gov. Kathy Hochul that threatens to destabilize our education system. The removal of “save harmless” from the foundation aid formula is not just a bureaucratic adjustment; it is a direct attack on our children’s future and the viability of our schools. more
We have seen how a global pandemic has made local housing prices surge to levels that make them unaffordable for many disheartened house hunters on Long Island. While the housing market is starting to return to pre-Covid levels, an average price is still out of reach for most young adults starting their careers, single-income households, and older residents looking to downsize. This will be a momentous year for determining whether oysters and clams thrive again in Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor. The future sustainability of the shellfish population hinges on decisions to be made in the coming months by the Town of Oyster Bay. more
If you ask New Yorkers what they want from their state government, you’ll hear the same complaints over and over: Everything has gotten too expensive. Taxes are crushing. Our streets are less safe than they used to be. The migrant crisis is making life worse for everyone. more
Democrats were understandably elated when former Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi won the special election in New York’s 3rd Congressional District on Feb. 13, but they shouldn’t be popping any champagne. In truth, Suozzi’s victory over the Republicans’ candidate, Mazi Melesa Pilip, was a lot closer than it should have been. more
Growing up in Island Park, I was always acutely aware of how lucky I was to be surrounded by beautiful beaches, bountiful waterways and stunning coastlines. Preserving Nassau County’s coastal environs has been a main priority of my tenure in public office, and I am proud to represent so many community partners who share in that goal. Indeed, the pristine nature of our South Shore was recently threatened by a large-scale offshore wind turbine project proposed by Equinor, but thanks to unified community opposition, this dubious plan appears to have stalled — for now. more
I’m 26, and have lived virtually my whole life in Hempstead. I’ve seen a lot of health-related issues — low-income people of color, like me, suffering from chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and untreated mental illness. Often they haven’t been able to receive proper treatment for their conditions. I wanted to do something about it, and soon I will be able to, because I’m on my way to becoming a doctor. more
