Police arrest one for attempted sexual assault in Freeport

Updated 2:15 p.m. May 1: The Nassau County Police Department’s Special Victims Squad arrested Umari Taylor, 20, from North Ocean Avenue in Freeport, and charged him with the attempted sexual assault of an unidentified 44-year-old woman at 11:30 a.m. on April 24 on South Main Street in Freeport.

According to detectives, the woman was walking behind 260 South Main St., when Taylor allegedly approached her from behind. Detectives said that Taylor demanded the woman take her clothing off. After a brief struggle, Taylor allegedly pulled out a knife and pressed it against the rear of her hip. As the struggle continued, Taylor pressed the knife against her neck and demanded she take her pants off. He then exposed himself to her. When she started screaming, Taylor ran off, according to police.

Taylor was charged with first-degree attempted criminal sexual act. He was arraigned at the First District Court on April 30. He made bail of $40,000/$80,000. His attorney, Michael DerGarabedian, was not available for comment. Taylor is due back in District Court 38 on May 6.
