Elmont Memorial High School, Covert Avenue schools closed

Elmont Memorial and Sewanhaka high schools were closed for a day each this past week, and the Covert Avenue School in Elmont will remain closed through Jan. 25, as the number of coronavirus cases continue to rise.

Instruction would take place remotely for the students at these schools, the Elmont and Sewanhaka superintendents told residents in two separate announcements on Jan. 18, and, Elmont Superintendent Kenneth Rosner said, the district will continue to work with the Nassau County Department of Health and “take all necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of our school community.”

The announcements came one day before the schools in Franklin Square were set to re-open after several people in the district tested positive for the virus or were required to quarantine. Now, the district is offering all of its students, parents and staff members voluntary Covid tests “to provide peace of mind to our families and staff without having to wait in long lines,” Superintendent Jared Bloom wrote on the district’s website.

There is no fee for the test, however, families will be asked to provide their health insurance information. Anyone who does not have health insurance will be asked to provide the medical professionals from ATC, the medical group the Franklin Square school district partnered with for the tests, with their Social Security number to bill the government.

Families who would like to be teste must sign up at www.FranklinSquareSchool.DragonflyPHD.com.
