Three Elmont, Franklin Square schools close for Covid cases

The Alden Terrace School in Elmont, as well as H. Frank Carey and Sewanhaka high schools will remain closed through Friday due to new coronavirus cases.

In a letter to parents on Dec. 9, Elmont Superintendent Kenneth Rosner explained that Alden Terrace would have to remain closed through Dec. 11, after a staff member tested positive for the novel virus, and many others were considered close contacts.

The building would be deep-cleaned during the three-day closure, he said, and all instruction would take place remotely until the school reopens on Dec. 14. The school’s grab-and-go breakfast and lunch program, meanwhile, would be held at the Dutch Broadway School from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Dec. 10.

Additionally, Sewanhaka Central High School District Superintendent James Grossane posted on the district’s website that H. Frank Carey and Sewanhaka High Schools are closed for the remainder of the week, after a student at Carey and a staff member at Sewanhaka tested positive for the coronavirus.

Students would learn remotely during this closure, he said, and anyone participating in the district’s Career and Technical Education program will attend those classes remotely as well. The buildings would be deep cleaned, meanwhile, and the Nassau County Department of Health would conduct contact tracing and inform everyone who needs to quarantine.

Once that is complete, Grossane said, he would be able to inform the public about when the schools can reopen.
