A kayaker in an overturned boat was rescued by volunteers from the Inwood, Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Meadowmere Park fire departments in the water off Inwood Marina near Joseph Sanford Jr. Channel shortly before noon on May 18, Inwood fire officials reported.

According to the officials, firefighters and emergency medical services crews converged on Inwood Park at the end of Bayview Avenue for a reported overturned boat. Assistant Chief Phillip Johnson initially observed the overturned kayak.

Ex-Chief Scott Howie of the Meadowmere Park F.D. kept the victim at the side of his personal boat in the marsh area until additional help arrived.

Water rescue crews from Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Meadowmere Park prepared to launch additional vessels. The injured kayaker was taken aboard the Inwood craft and transported to the marina for evaluation.

All operations were concluded in fewer than 30 minutes, Inwood officials said.
