Elmont native serves first year as Team Haiti lacrosse captain

For the past year, Stevens Cadet has been serving as the captain of Haiti’s national lacrosse team.

The Elmont-native was named the captain last year, when Haiti joined the Federation of International Lacrosse.

At the time, he said, he was volunteering at a lacrosse training camp run by Paul Rabil, whom Cadet described as the Lebron James of lacrosse. Cadet, who is of Haitian descent, said he spoke to Rabil about his desire to be a professional athlete, and Rabil suggested he join the newly-formed Team Haiti.

Then, when he heard his name called in the first round of picks, he said, he felt relieved that “all that hard work paid off” because he “always wanted to put a stamp of approval” on any sport he participates in.

Cadet said the team has yet to compete in any tournaments or championships, as they are still organizing the team, but have instead spent their time training and teaching young Haitians lacrosse.

He added that he is excited to continue playing for Team Haiti in the years to come.
